It's been a busy summer! Both Sam and I have been training for August events: Sam just recently raced in the Leadville Trail 100 MTB race, and I will be competing in a duathlon less than two weeks from now. Even though bike time is important to both of us, we enjoy our creating time as well. I have been pushing to make some of the pieces that have been floating through my mind as I ride. Some have gone better than I imagined, while others have left me twisting and cocking my head, trying to determine where things went awry.
Recently, I was asked where my ideas originate. Truly, they come from a range of places. Sometimes an idea starts with a simple comment made by a passer-by; other times I have an experience or a dream that sparks an idea, and sometimes I just wonder what would happen if I put pieces together that wouldn't naturally be seen in an of-this-world animal or other critter.
There are times when I keep exploring a created creature, wondering if it could be improved or revised to make it more interesting or to appear as though it could exist in our world. As I continue to explore one idea, sometimes others come from it. I suppose this is the case for most of us who make -- the more we create, the more the ideas keep coming.
Currently, I'm working on a few different pieces. The one pictured above is currently in a drying state and waiting to be glazed and fired. She stands at about a foot and a half (before firing - she'll definitely shrink during that process) and will eventually, assuming she makes it through the firing stage, be dressed in colorful clothing. Although I have mental images of her final state, it is almost certain that she will end up looking different than originally imagined. But, that's part of the fun of this process.
Where do you find inspiration? How do you express those moments that tickle your imagination? Feel free to share here.
